Olubajo, O O and Daniel, E I (2024) Understanding a worker recruitment as a practice of informality in construction work packages. In: Thomson, C. (ed.) Proceedings of 40th Annual ARCOM Conference, 2-4 September 2024, London South Bank University, UK.
Abstract
Managing work in projects that are executed informally can be challenging. One reason for this is that construction work involves processes that can be difficult to coordinate when agreements and workers are recruited informally. Research into the informal recruitment of workers in construction tends to focus on the relationship between the informal operating environment in construction and the recruitment of a worker. A second thread focuses on the interface between the informal and formal sector of the construction market. However, detailed understanding of how workers are hired or managed and the role of objects in projects executed informally is limited. Therefore, the aim of this study is to understand how workers are engaged informally around work packages. A social practice approach is adopted, and practices enacted with workers recruited with minimal compliance to formal housing regulations is studied. Data is obtained through interviews and observations. The anticipated results would reveal the role of objects in the way workers are recruited or hired
