Integrated project delivery (IPD): Projecting a common good to key participants and the project

Purpose: The project delivery method that is used for a project has an impact on the efficiency of the project. Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) often results in improved project efficiency. This study aims to identify the potentials in IPD towards projecting a common good for all participants involved in project delivery. The main focus is on the quality of design documentation that is produced because it serves as the basis for executing the project. Design/Methodology/Approach: Two phases methodological approach; first was a review on IPD case studies to identify the outcome of such projects and secondly, a questionnaire survey on IPD benefits by identifying the significance of contractual and behavioral principles in IPD to project participants. Google form was used to collect survey data. The target participants are researchers and practitioners who have at least some knowledge about IPD. To determine the validity and reliability of the survey instrument, a pilot study was conducted. Findings: Synthesized case studies on the outcomes of twenty-one (21) construction projects that were delivered using IPD are presented. The significance of both contractual and behavioral principles of IPD including the significance of early involvement and collaboration of key participants (Owners, Designers, and Constructors) in project delivery and IPD projecting a common good is presented. Practical Implications: The study provides significant insight into how IPD has the potential to project a common good to all project participants in project delivery. Originality/Value: Empirical evidence is provided on the potentials of IPD to project a common good to project participants in project delivery. This study is the first of its kind to explore the common good that is inherent in the implementation of IPD in construction project delivery.
