Abstract

To enable the construction industry to execute sustainable renovation projects which entails a reduction in wasted resources, an increase in productivity and a more socially sustainable construction process new tools are needed. A maturity model can be a simple and effective tool for a company to evaluate the quality of a process. In recent years a number of maturity models have been proposed to evaluate the construction industry such as the supply chain in construction projects or the maturity of LEAN construction implementation. The construction industry has seen a trend in the last couple of decades towards a higher level of integration of the supply chain. Examples of this can be seen in several countries and there has been shown a significant potential for such integration and collaboration between individual companies and across the construction industry supply chain. The focus of this paper is to synthesize a maturity model from the examples and experiences of the construction industry, through interviews, workshops and case studies, to further develop the potential within strategic collaboration. Strategic collaboration has been found to be one of the prerequisites for organizational learning across the supply chain. The authors together with industry experts and practitioners have identified five distinct steps and developed these in two complementary models; one for individual construction projects and the other for construction project portfolios. With the models companies in the construction industry are able to make an assessment of their own development potential regarding strategic collaboration and be guided in their further development. The maturity model also highlights the progression from construction projects with low or no collaboration to highly integrated long term strategic collaboration. The model supports companies and clients to successfully develop competences which enable them to execute construction projects with a range of collaboration levels.
