Organizational strategies for construction technology transfer to China

You, H (2000) Organizational strategies for construction technology transfer to China. Unpublished PhD thesis, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong.

Abstract

Recent reviews of the literature have expressed concern over the lack of attention to the issue of organizational effectiveness and organizational characteristics for technology transfer organizations. This study addresses this deficiency by constructing a contingency model of technology transfer organization and an organization performance model. Eight prerequisites are defined before building the models and three propositions are resulted after the establishment of the models. These propositions are: • The effectiveness of technology transfer is dependent on the organizational positive culture which has the characteristics that make employee commit to corporation, have skills beyond a narrow specialty and coordinate well with other people in the organization in order to increase the receiver's ability to acquire the imported technology. • The receiver's management system should take the sender's or the organizations should construct its new management system that helps to absorb the technology effectively. • A participating leadership style is positive to the effectiveness of technology transfer. The propositions are justified against three cases. The methodology involves both interview and questionnaire. The relationship between successful technology transfer and organizational characteristics is found to be moderated by the complexity of different cases. The proposition is subsequently found to be valid in the cases sample. The thesis concludes by considering the implications of these findings for effective technology transfer to China and recommending avenues for further research.
