Abstract

This dissertation presents the development of a knowledge base representation for a construction measurement control information system (CMCIS). The conceptual model that identifies control data to be collected for and generated by a control information system is used as a knowledge base representation model. Three project phases (prebid or estimation, preconstruction or planning, and construction) and four control functions (cost, schedule, resources, and productivity) are included. Two primary objectives are addressed in this dissertation, which are (1) the identification of control data and their classifications, the interactions between control data, and the flow of control data within a CMCIS, and (2) the development of a computerized system that can represent the relationships and identify the missing links between the control data within a single control system defined in the conceptual model. Upon the completion of the conceptual model development, the structure and organization of the control data are validated through a computerized Conceptual Model Representation System (CMRS) by selected experts. The conceptual model indicates that the relationships among the control data are complex and the input data are common for four control functions (cost, schedule, resources, and productivity).
