Abstract

A review of the literature related to building activities and present practices in the building industry reveals the lack of a systematic method for the selection, design, and integration of building sub-systems that can minimize the cost of the building production on a site specific real-time basis. Accordingly, in this study, a comprehensive theoretical basis for a model of cost minimization for these conditions is developed, as a first step towards the formulation of an applicable cost minimization model. The study employs methods of operations research, network analysis, graph theory and economics, in four basic phases: (1) Examination of the building process as a system operating within specific locational and time conditions. (2) Formulation of a method for the enumeration of various technological options which may be employed for the execution of the building and mapping them into a network. (3) Formulation of a method for the compilation of the cost functions for the various technological options. (4) Discussion of mathematical optimization techniques that may be used for the global optimization of the cost of building production as defined as the previous phases. The study ends with conclusions and suggestions for further steps to develop this preparatory study to an applicable model.
