Abstract

Construction sites can be particularly vulnerable to natural disasters such as hurricanes. They include incomplete structures that are still under construction, temporary structures and unsecured equipment that could be damaged during disasters, and hazardous materials that require special handling and storage. Therefore, to facilitate more resilient built environments, there is sorely a need to equip construction professionals with knowledge on disaster-resilient construction practices (DRCPs). To address this need, this paper proposes an ontology-based semantic model for representing and reasoning about the knowledge of DRCPs in construction job sites. The model is designed to serve as a foundation for a knowledge-based decision-making system on DRCPs. The model was implemented in a document classification module of the system, and the results of the experiment indicate that the model is applicable in supporting the classification of DRCP knowledge. The proposed model facilitates effective and efficient decision-making towards more resilient construction sites.
