Abstract

On a construction site, space allocation to various temporary facilities (TFs) affects construction progress and safety-related issues. Locating TFs is more crucial in hilly regions where space is generally limited. Due to topographical variations in hilly regions, requirements of various TFs, and interlinked constraints, proper allocation of space to various TFs is difficult. The present paper reviews heuristic and non-heuristic techniques to locate various TFs on a construction site. The review indicates that topographical and safety aspects have been ignored in both heuristic and non-heuristic techniques. The present paper explores the applications of geographic information systems (GIS) for allocating safe space to TFs on a construction site in a hilly region to consider topographical and safety aspects. It considers the available site space to identify safe locations for locating TFs by considering restricted areas, construction safety zones, and site topography. The GIS-based framework has been developed and implemented for locating TFs safely on the site during construction stage of an infrastructure facility being constructed in an institute campus located on the hilly region.
